Lucy completed her studies at Rhodes University, Grahamstown, in early 2000, with an MSc in ichthyology. She went on to complete the Atlas of Southern African Freshwater Fishes for the South African Institute for Aquatic Biodiversity (SAIAB, then known as the JLB Smith Institute of Ichthyology), and later joined Enviro-Fish Africa (Pty) Ltd (EFA) as a consultant. She now works for the Programmes Office of SAIAB, for the Freshwater Biodiversity Conservation Programme and the African Coelacanth Ecosystem Programme, and still retains close ties with EFA.

Lucy has experience designing and building Geographic Information Systems, from the collection of raw data to the design of products such as interactive CDs, charts and digital maps. She has used spatial information systems to support decision-making in aquaculture and conservation planning in South Africa and Malawi. She has also been part of a team that developed a coastal management programme for the Eastern Cape of South Africa.
