Andrew Green, who is carrying out research on the geology and geomorphology of the coelacanth habitat at Sodwana Bay, whilst reading for his PhD thesis through ACEP, has won an award for his MSc thesis. The 2004 Southern African Association of Geomorphologists Certificate of Excellence for the best Masters thesis was awarded to University of KwaZulu-Natal School of Environmental Sciences student Andrew Green for his meticulous and detailed analysis of "The fish traps and sedimentary dynamics of Kosi Bay Estuary, northern KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa". Andrew was supervised by Prof Gerry Garland of the School of Environmental Sciences and co-supervised by Dr Ron Uken from the School of Geological Sciences. The study concluded that although the fish traps encourage short term sedimentation, in the long term their effects are insignificant when compared to extreme flood events. This is the second time Andrew has been honoured by the Association – he won the award for the best Honours thesis in 2002 - and the third time that School of Environmental Sciences students under the supervision of Prof Garland have received honours and masters Certificates of Excellence in recent years. Andrew is currently studying the geology and geomorphology of Coelacanth habitats off Sodwana Bay, under the supervision of Dr Uken. See this page for more information. |
