January 2006 Dear Educator RE: AFRICAN COELACANTH ECOSYSTEM PROGRAMME We take this opportunity to introduce our educational resources to you and we are willing to run workshops for teachers on any of the material listed below. All our resources are linked to the Revised National Curriculum Statements.
Ocean Exploration with Old Four Legs - Video 1 This video concentrates on why oceans are important to us and also introduces learners to the different habitats in the ocean and the biodiversity that occurs in these habitats. The video has been developed for Senior Phase learners in the General Education and Training Band. The module has been designed to provide opportunities for learners to develop skills and for teachers to assess learners’ mastery of outcomes listed in the Natural Science, Technology and Social Sciences Learning Areas. Ocean Careers with Old Four Legs – Video 2 This video introduces learners to different careers associated with the marine environment. Careers linked to ports, ships, research vessels, physical and biological sciences are discussed. This video has been developed for Senior Phase learners in the General Education and Training Band. The module has been designed to provide opportunities for learners to develop skills and for teachers to assess learners’ mastery of outcomes listed in the Life Orientation and Natural Science learning Areas. Scientists at Work – Interactive CD This interactive CD gives learners insight into the life of scientists who are involved in deep-sea research. It takes a look at research vessels, submersibles and the work scientists do. This interactive CD has been developed for Senior Phase learners in the General Education and Training Band. The module has been designed to provide opportunities for learners to develop skills and for teachers to assess learners’ mastery of outcomes listed in the Natural Science, Mathematics, Social Sciences and Technology Learning Areas. Marine Related Worksheets These sessions introduce learners to different concepts linked to the marine environment and are divided into foundation phase, intermediate phase and senior phase. Learning areas include Natural Science, Life Orientation, Mathematics, Technology, Social Sciences, Arts & Culture and Languages. A workbook has been designed for each phase – foundation, intermediate & senior phases– and each workbook focuses on aspects relevant to the curriculum in each phase. Foundation Phase : coelacanths, special creatures of the deep, other canyon creatures, adaptations for feeding & camouflage and protection. Intermediate Phase : coelacanths, living in the deep sea, a canyon adventure, modeling a deep-sea canyon & rocky shore habitats Senior Phase : Coelacanths and timelines, keeping a Jago logbook, ecology of coelacanths, global warming and coelacanths & people and the coast. Coelacanth Fact Sheet A fact sheet giving information about coelacanth, their biology, distribution and interesting facts printed on card for easy use. If you would like us to run workshops please bear the following in mind: The African Coelacanth Ecosystem Programme will organise: - our own transport & accommodation for the presenter to the city and venue (South Africa only)
- will provide resources such as pens, glue, scissors to run the workshop
- will provide each teacher with a copy of the resource
- will provide each teacher with a variety of general resources from different organisations i.e. posters, puzzles, fact files, etc.
Your organization / school / department will need to provide the following: - venue
- teachers (min of 15, max of 25 per workshop)
- R10 per teacher attending payable to SAIAB
- catering if required i.e. tea/ coffee
- Media resources i.e. TV / video machine, but these will be discussed when the workshop is booked.
