Spatial data and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are essential tools in marine science. Like weather systems, marine systems tend to be influenced by a complex array of interrelated parameters, and exhibit large scale geographic and temporal patterns that must be modelled to be understood. The African Coelacanth Ecosystem Programme has been developing and using GIS systems for project-specific purposes in the WIO region since 2003. Maps produced from the GIS have been used in reports, educational materials, expedition planning, dive planning, posters and scientific papers. Several maps and data sets are available on this site, for viewing or for downloading: - Maps
