Sediment samples for geoscience research are collected in two main ways: - Grab samplers
- Corers
Grab samplers can be imagined as a set of jaws on the end of a rope; they are lowered to the seabed where they can then scoop up a sample of whatever sediment is there. Corers are like hollow drill bits that go into the sediment and extract a column of sediment. This is particularly useful if you want to see how conditions have changed in the past, as material is continuously deposited on the sea floor. It is also possible to use various sampling instruments when SCUBA diving or from ROVs or submersibles, and to pick up specific rock or sediment samples.
