Bongo Nets
Bongo nets are used to take samples of plankton from the water column. The bongo nets are usually equipped with a 500 micron mesh to collect zooplankton, including fish larvae. The nets are equipped with flow sensors so we can calculate how much water has flowed through the nets, allowing us to know how rich in zooplankton particular bodies of water are in relation to others.

Bongo nets are called bongo nets because they look a little bit like bongo drums!

The samples collected from these nets are either frozen or fixed in formalin for later analysis.
