Most learners have very little knowledge of the huge diversity and immensely important career opportunities that the marine environment holds. The marine environment plays a key role in our lives - oceans are responsible for our climate, food, the richness of life in both the sea and on the land and for almost every breath of air we breathe. In recognising how important oceans are to us for our survival, we need to promote a greater awareness of the marine environment and in the case of this video the careers associated with the marine environment. - What types of Careers are there associated with the marine environment?
- What does an oceanographer do?
- What does a Vessel Traffic Controller do and where do they work?
This video, together with the Facilitator and Learner manuals, is designed to answer these questions and give students an idea of what career opportunities are available to them associated with the marine environment. The video also looks at what the different careers entail and what qualifications are required for these careers. This learning programme is designed as part of the African Coelacanth Ecosystem Programme’s (ACEP) education initiative. It has been developed for Senior Phase learners in the General Education and Training (GET) band to expand their understanding of the marine sciences. The module has been designed to provide additional opportunities for learners to develop skills, and for teachers to assess learners’ mastery of these skills, as defined in the Life Orientation Learning Area outcome. This learning programme has been developed for grades 7 - 9. The video consists of the following sections: - Preview: Introduction
